Lotus Seed Scarification

The seed of the Lotus is covered in a very hard outer covering that must first be breached to allow for water to enter the seed and hasten germination. This process is called scarification. In my research, I found different recommendations as to how to do this. Some recommend sawing through the seed coat, and others sanding down the seed coat. I decided to sand down the seed coat by scraping it against a concrete patio stone, and to do this in three different methods to see if there was any difference between them in terms of successful germination.

Beneath the dark brown outer covering of the seed coat, is a lighter brown covering that surrounds the cotyledon which in turn, is white in colour. Within the cotyledon is the lotus embryo. In the process of scarification it is important not to damage the cotyledon and certainly not the embryo itself. If you examine the lotus seed, you will notice that it has two distinct poles, a pointed end, and a dimpled end. The embryo will arise from the dimpled end. I handled the first seed rather gingerly, afraid that I may damage the embryo, so I decided to breach the seed coat with a simple linear abrasion. I soon found out how tough this little seed can be. I spent several minutes scraping the seed against the brick and then against the sharp edge of the brick to finally produce a linear breach in the seed coat...

For the second seed, I decided to scarify the dimpled end of the seed. As you will see, there is an air-space between the outer coat and the cotyledon in this area. I scraped the seed until the space was visible...

For the third seed I scraped the side of the seed until there was a circular breach of the seed coat....

The seeds were then soaked in water that was maintained at a temperature of 26-28C.

Epocrates

This announcement was paid for by Epocrates

I remember back in med school, during clerkship and internship, how most of us went out and got PDA's. They were supposed to helps us in the hospital. You can store a lot of information on those things. This meant that you could free up a lot of extra space in your cerebral hard drive which was already crammed packed with so many facts and figures it actually hurt to access the necessary information when it was necessary. Unfortunately, they often turned out to be a source of entertainment on those sleepless on-call nights. My PDA was loaded with games and even a pet monkey that would die if you didn't feed it everyday. However, there was one important program that proved to be very handy to have on your PDA, it was the drug reference Epocrates.

With Epocrates, a click of a stylus, gave you access to complete drug information just when you needed it, so you could make more well informed prescribing decisions. With just a click, you can know a particular drug's indicatons, and interactions with other drugs. I'm not surprised to know that nowadays, Epocrates medical drug reference software is used by over 500,000 healthcare professionals. It's available for multiple devices and offers clinicians free medical Pocket PC software, free medical Palm software, and free medical Windows Mobile software. The company has also recently launched a free drug reference for BlackBerry devices, and is working with Apple to develop a downloadable drug guide for iPhone devices. If you have an iPhone or iPod Touch, you can currently access Epocrates content by visiting m.epcorates.com on your Safari web browser.

Check out www.epocrates.com/products for more information on the Epocrates free and premium product offerings.

Allergic Rhinitis

There is a lot of dust in my bedroom. It's really aggravating my allergic rhinitis. I notice that I start getting congested around bedtime, or when I'm lying or even sitting on my bed. I've cleaned out my room, dusted and vacuumed, and that seemed to help for a while. But after a couple of days or so, I start getting congested again. I've been using loratadine daily, along with fluticasone nasal spray. But that's not even enough. I've had to go for otrivin nasal spray as well, or I can't get to sleep. I suspect that I have nasal polyps as well.

Nerding Out

I have been spending too much time and money lately on eBay nerding out on Star Wars! I still remember the days of Kenner action figures back in the late '70's and the '80's. I used to have so many of those Star Wars guys, an AT-AT Walker, a Snowspeeder, a Tie Fighter, etc... but one day, my uncle cleaned out the basement and threw them all out! I didn't really care at the time because I had already grown out of playing with them. But I did not realize that loosing all those toys would affect me as an adult years later. When the Star Wars prequels were finally made, they also made new action figures. And so began my obsession with re-living my childhood and collecting as many Star Wars toys as possible. The difference this time, is that getting more Star Wars stuff does not depend on my parents, but on my own wallet. May the Force be with you!
