Dammit, Lost did it again.... left me hanging I mean.... I wish I had the complete Season 1 on DVD.... Lost Fix

I knew there was a good reason for me not to watch Lost when it first came out... my schedule was a little too tight back then to get hooked on an hour long weekly fix.... I sensed the show's addictive powers after the first episode.... I was hella right.... now that space is showing it from the beginning, and I've got a little more time to get hooked, I can say that I'm officially hooked on Lost.... iLASIK

I worked for two years in an eye surgery clinic, so I am familiar with the LASIK procedure. I have worn glasses since high school, so I am also familiar with the hassles of glasses and contact lenses. My glasses are always fogging up in the colder months, falling off when I go running, and forget about seeing the pretty fishes when I go SCUBA. Forget about contact lenses, they irritate my eyes. So when I started working at an eye surgery clinic, I was pretty enthusiastic about getting surgery done on my eyes and rid myself of the hassles of glasses and contact lenses.

Assisting in hundreds of LASIK procedures however, turned me off to the whole thing, mainly because of the "conventional" way that its done. I am specifically referring to the microkeratome, the instrument that is used to create the corneal flap. Before the microkeratome can be applied to the eye a suction ring must be applied directly on the eyeball. After suction is turned on to stabilize the eyeball, the microkeratome a placed on top of the suction ring and eye. Inside the microkeratome is a small blade that will incise the cornea, making a very thin flap that can be reflected back so that the laser can reshape the corneal tissue. This microkeratome step in the procedure was the only step where I actually held my breath, because so many things could go wrong with that delicate instrument. And the idea of a blade touching my eye just made me queezy.

Well, thank science for the iLASIK™ Procedure. The latest in LASIK technology makes the procedure easier and safer. With iLASIK, no more blades are necessary. Instead, two lasers are used. One of those lasers will create the corneal flap, and the other laser will do the corneal re-shaping just like in the conventional procedure. If I was assisting an iLASIK procedure, I think I would probably breath easier knowing that an ultra-fast, computer guided laser was creating the flap rather than a hand held delicate machine with a blade. LASIK has been around long enough, and I have seen so many happy post-operative patients with 20/20 vision or better. But with iLASIK™, the procedure sounds even safer and easier. The military evaluated this modern LASIK procedure in 100 military personnel, and showed that 95% achieved 20/20 uncorrected vision or better. This is critical for professions that require excellent uncorrected vision, like atheletes, astronauts, and military men and women, so it's not surprising that NASA and the Department of Defense have taken a keen interest in LASIK. According to Dr. Steven Schallhorn, M.D., a retired U.S. Navy captain and leader of clinical research and studies done for the DOD regarding the use of LASIK, “The DOD and NASA have validated the fact that today’s LASIK exceeds all established standards of safety and effectiveness". Hungry Hungry Nermal

I just fed Nermal a late breakfast/early lunch. I asked him if he was hungry and he replied "meeeoooow", but it sounded more like "Ya I'm hungry, what are you stupid or something?". Anyways, he just finished a few seconds ago and he comes upstairs to the computer and complains that it wasn't enough. Since I'm trying not to be distracted, just ignored him, and he eventually gave up and went to the corner to sulk and groom. Anyways, I am really feeling sick now, it's not funny anymore. I submitted my list of programs, so I've done all that I can. I got a little worried, because one of the documents that was assigned to the programs has not yet been scanned. I'm hoping that they will scan it next week. Oh well, I'm not going to worry about it. I'm feeling really sick and I think I should just lie down.... I know I'm getting sick when my gums start to tingle.... is that weird?

Don't Eat Gourds

Okay, remember how I tried my hand at growing dipper gourds, bird house gourds, and loofah sponges? I was hoping to to grow the gourds for food, and the extras I would use to make dippers and bird houses and what not, but I learned the hard way that you can't eat gourds! Loofah's are another story, but then that's also another blog. Apparently some gourds contain a purgative. If you get past the initial nasty bitter flavor of the gourd flesh and end up swallowing said gourd flesh, then you're in for some vomiting! So just enjoy these gourds for their utilitarian properties, and not their culinary properties or lack there of. Of course, the bitter gourd/bitter melon is also another story. It's bitter, but not nasty bitter like the dipper and bird house gourds. It's edible and won't make you blow your chunks. Once you acquire the taste buds for its bitter flavor, it's quite addictive.

Lost

Speaking of the Space Network, I started watching Lost.... I tried watching it when if first came out, and it was really good.... so good, that I had to stop watching because I didn't want to get hooked.... I was too busy at that time.... well, I've got a little more time now, and it's too late coz I got hooked this time around. Luckily it's aired every day so I don't have to wait a whole week to see what happens next... anyway, I better hit the hay and stop watching so much tv....

Too Much TV

The title says it all... I have been watching too much T.V. First of all, Stargate SG-1 finally finished running all the episodes up to when O'Neil leaves... that's on the Space Network BTW. I have been following all the episodes because it seemed like I had missed a few towards the end of the series. I realize now that I actually didn't miss any, up until the last episode with O'Neil. After that, I wasn't able to follow all the episodes consecutively, so I'm hoping Space will continue to air those episodes when Mitchell takes over SG-1.... anyways I'm a nerd....

Remebering Community

I remember how I especially found my rotation in community medicine rewarding. Living within a community in the countryside and running a primary health care facility there, gave us the opportunity to see a variety of patients from pediatric to geriatric in a family practice setting. Most of the cases were the typical problems seen in family practice, but in the process, I also gained the sense that we truly became an integral part of the community. My mentors in primary medicine were exceptionally hard-working and dedicated physicians. They were also exceptional human beings, who communicated and connected with their patients on a human level.

At work, the call center is supposed to handle all the questions about the different kinds of surgery the clinic performs. Most of the time however, the clinical staff end up in there answering the questions. I've spent a lot of time in there and I didn't realize how much work went into setting up a call center. I certainly do not consider NeoWorx to be anything close to a reliable blog ranking expert. But some people actually take it seriously! I used to play along with the Little Neo's top blogs list a few years ago, but I completely forgot about it until a few days ago. Well, in a matter of a few days I have moved from not even being on the list to being number six... wow neoworx has really allowed its standards to drop! haha... I'm shooting for the top two spot, I don't want to knock Monsoon out of her top number one site, I like her blog. Remember the days when Cat was number two, I don't remember who used to be number one back then? Most of those good blogs have moved on from NeoWorx. Well, not me I'm back! Wish me luck!

Lotus Seed Germination Part 10

On Day 20, Lotus #2 appears to be doing well under the new warm water conditions of the aquarium. It has grown out a fourth leaf, but it looks like leaf #1 is turning yellow. Hopefully, it will not deteriorate any further. Lotus #2 continues to grow happily. It's second leaf is now turning brown, but its other leaves look very healthy. Lotus #3 also continues to grow vigorously. It's new leaf (leaf #3) appears larger than the rest, even larger than Lotus #2's leaves.

What Happened?

What happened to Tony Harris? He's actually stopped yelling! It's great, I can watch the news on CNN without fear of being annoyed. Maybe he caught wind of how annoying he was, or maybe he just reached a good balance in his medications.... just kidding. Now that Tony Harris is good, my attention is turning to Rick Sanchez. He's slowing gaining my vote as the most annoying CNN anchor...

Lotus Seed Germination Part 9

On Day 19 it was clear that the conditions under which Louts #1 was growing was not going to be sufficient to sustain it through the fall and winter months. If you recall, it was sitting in a sunny window with a southern exposure. Although it had grown out three leaves, none of them had unfurled. I decided to move it into the heated aquarium along with the rest of the lotus plants before its condition deteriorated.Lotus #2, by contrast, has been growing more vigorously. It has put out its first runner....which corresponds to its fifth leaf. Unfortunately, leaf #2 appears to have died.Lotus #3 is also growing more vigorously in comparison to Lotus #1. It has grown a third leaf.
